This advanced hands-on lab explores CMDB 360 and multisource CMDB data in ServiceNow, giving learners a practical investigation into how information from multiple sources can result in different values for the same Configuration Item (CI). Rather than simply identifying a field or configuration setting, you’ll investigate a realistic CMDB data-quality concern and determine whether the value displayed on the CI is actually incorrect or is the expected result of ServiceNow’s multisource and reconciliation behavior.
You’ll begin with a reported issue involving a Linux Server CI and investigate the record using the All menu and standard ServiceNow navigation. From the CI form, you’ll examine attributes such as Assigned to, then open the record in CMDB Workspace and explore the available CMDB 360 functionality. You’ll compare the information presented on the CI with source-level CMDB 360 data, requiring you to pay close attention to ServiceNow’s terminology and distinguish related—but different—attributes such as Assigned to and Managed by.
The investigation then moves into the underlying multisource data. You’ll examine how different data sources can provide conflicting values for the same CI attribute and use CMDB MultiSource Column Metadata to determine what the underlying columns actually represent. This is an important practical CMDB skill: the information presented by a multisource view isn't necessarily organized using the friendly field labels you see on a CI form, so understanding the relationship between source data and CI attributes is essential.
Finally, you’ll investigate Reconciliation Definitions and evaluate how source priority affects the value ultimately represented on the CI. The challenge is deliberately designed so that the newest source value is not automatically the correct answer. You must correlate the CI's current value, the competing source values, the attribute metadata, and reconciliation priorities to determine what ServiceNow is actually doing.
This lab is designed for advanced CIS-DF learners who want to move beyond memorizing CMDB 360 and reconciliation concepts and practice applying them through a realistic ServiceNow investigation. By completing it, you’ll gain practical experience tracing multisource CMDB information, interpreting conflicting source data, distinguishing CI attributes, and reasoning about how reconciliation determines the resulting CMDB state.
